Multiplayer & Shared Experiences

Shared Activities and Colocated Experiences are at the heart of this work: MR Motifs that help people interact around shared content, alongside earlier multiplayer collaborations with Photon.

Multiplayer starts with what people want to do together. We work back from that shared activity to the presence, spatial alignment and networking it needs, then make the implementation easier for other developers to build on.

Give people something to do together

Start with a shared activity, not just a connection. Design how people take turns, respond to each other and understand what everyone else is doing.

Build a shared sense of place

Keep people and virtual content aligned, whether participants share a physical room or join remotely. Consistent positions and clear feedback make the space feel shared.

Make the complexity usable

Turn difficult networking and avatar integrations into working foundations. Reusable examples and clear explanations help developers spend more time on the experience.

01 Shared Activities

A Mixed Reality Motif for chess, movie co-watching and shared interaction.

Our contribution

As part of Mixed Reality Motifs, we led work on Shared Activities: Unity samples for chess and movie co-watching. The samples bring networked avatars and shared interaction together around activities people can understand immediately. Working scenes and developer guidance connect the experience to its implementation, giving teams something concrete to study and build on.

02 Colocated Experiences

A Mixed Reality Motif for bringing participants into the same physical and virtual space.

Our contribution

As part of Mixed Reality Motifs, we led work on a Unity sample combining shared anchors, Colocation Discovery and MRUK Space Sharing. It demonstrates how participants discover each other and align their experiences with the same physical room. By bringing discovery, spatial alignment and shared room information into one sample, the work makes the complete colocation flow easier to understand.

03 Meta Avatars Multiplayer Template & Course

Making a difficult multiplayer integration accessible: a working Meta Avatars template and a course built around it.

Photon collaboration: the template demonstrates synchronized avatars and interactable objects in a shared scene.

Our contribution

In collaboration with Photon, we tackled that integration and turned it into a reusable Unity template, making a difficult API accessible through working examples. The course grew out of that work, using the template to teach avatar setup, networked poses and shared interaction step by step. Photon Fusion has come a long way since then; the Meta Avatars generation used here has been deprecated, so this work documents the challenges and solutions of that earlier tooling.
